Any Anything Also Can is a broadside exhibition of multi-lingual poetry, organised by Sing Lit Station and curated by Tse Hao Guang, for The Art House‘s Textures 2019 programme. The exhibition featured eight poems—each uniquely reflecting the multi-cultural linguistic texture of Singapore—creatively re-interpreted as broadsides.
The shared language, heritage and culture in Singapore is an eclectic amalgamation of aspects of each other’s ethnic groups, shared, borrowed, exchanged and integrated over time. Any Anything Also Can celebrates this very “shared-ness” unique to Singapore’s culture. The visual identity seeks to embody the uniqueness of Singapore’s culture and linguistic identity.
Each poster is folded allowing the colour from the other side to come to the fore and interact with the other colours; these folding marks act as a meeting point, signifying the cross over and connection between cultures and languages which we often mix to create new meanings. In the process of creating a new local slang, it becomes part of our identity. As each poster is folded differently, the resulting combination of colours and unique shapes give the identity a distinctive look.

The exhibition logotype is designed with both angular and curvy features—through a twist along the bars or stems for some letters. This detail reflects the folding and bending seen when paper is being manipulated; yet is also representative of the versatility and intersection seen in our society’s use of our diverse language.
The composition of the words within the logotype works in a modular fashion, allowing the placement to adapt and work dynamically with the different negative shapes created when folding the posters.
