The Necessary Stage

(Proposal)
Off Centre by The Necessary Stage is a monumental piece in Singapore theatre that takes on the uneasy topic of mental illness through the characters of Saloma and Vinod. First staged in September 1993, the portrayal of the mental health conditions and social stigma the characters encounter on stage in 2019 makes it apparent that the issue the play deals with is still relevant in our society today.

The proposed direction dwells on the idea of a fragile equilibrium of the mind. Similar to a swinging pendulum which never reaches an equilibrium, the characters deal with a constant and complex transition between highs and lows—emotionally, mentally, and physically. This polarity creates an imbalance and contrast.

Through overlapping and intertwining circles to create a graphic of multiple perspectives and dimensions, it draws a reflection between internal mind and external action which often influence each other.

The logotype features a mix of seemingly normal and quirky letters that come together to create a unique range of letters that still fit well together. Blurring the line as to what is deemed normal and up to society’s acceptable standard.
